AUGUST, 2007 IN REVIEW

Hello again Listen!Nashville readers. August was another fantastic month of music performances here in Music City from phenomenal Nashville-based artists.

The standout performance was Luna Halo's dazzling set over at the Exit/In, proving that they are the real deal — and deserve to be huge (they will be huge). Piano man Gabe Dixon and his trio played two shows in August, one of which was a capacity crowd Exit/In performance. These guys are obviously great, obviously top-notch musicians who will be successful in whatever direction these guys choose to go. But GDB must continue writing edgier songs or they will lose their college audience to an older Billy Joel digging crowd — which is cool, but I'd hate to see these guys go from filling rooms like the Exit/In to playing cruise ship nightclubs, or Vegas.

A couple of artists I had the opportunity to check out in August, and will be writing about soon enough are Paper Route and Moriah Harris. Paper Route is so ELO it's not even funny, and these guys do the electronica thing so well. Great three-part vocal harmonies, and satisfying techno-grooves all add up to a very contemporary take on ELO style pop rock. We all packed in like Sardines over at The End to catch Paper Route. I just wish these guys would dress the part—seriously, some color coordination would be a nice touch to the live show. Moriah Harris is a name that all Americana fans will be hearing very soon, if you haven't already. All fans of Sarah Siskind, Gillian Welch, Everybodyfields, etc., will find much to like about Moriah Harris. Harris's songs are on par with the likes of songwriter Sarah Siskind, and her vocals are reminiscent of sultry Norah Jones — if Norah Jones had been raised in Middle Tennessee. Expect great things to come from Moriah Harris.

Last, go and check out The Jane Shermans later in September. Their LP is the best rock album I've heard this year. Singer Eulene Sherman's vocals are, well, bad-ass is the best way to describe it. Check out my record review for more details. These guys are going to blow up as soon as they find a home for their record. Go see The Jane Shermans in late September, and a Basement show in early October. Vincent Wynne, Editor
