April 2, 2009 @ The Basement — Charlie Hardin

Newcomer Charlie Hardin Blends Americana with Lots of Soul

Charlie Hardin is a name this writer had never heard before he stepped on stage last Thursday night (April 2) at The Basement to open for Mikky Ekko. By the time Hardin completed his 40 minute set he'd won over the entire audience. Hardin's voice is superb, a blend of Southern roots and heart-wrenching soul.

Hardin writes intelligent pop songs with an Americana feel and a shot of Mississippi soul. Like fellow Mississippi native Jeremy Lister, Hardin has a lovely voice with a huge range and a knack for writing strong hooks. Indeed, fans of Lister as well as Nashville favorite Thad Cockrell will find much to like in Hardin. Hardin's songs are filled with the energy and dose of melancholy found in early Counting Crows, yet his vocals are less Adam Duritz and more Ryan Adams. Expect Hardin's music career to flourish in the coming years. To be sure, Hardin is one Nashville artist to watch in 2009. —Vincent Wynne
