Kyle Andrews and Frankenberry Serve Up a Late-Night Breakfast of Techno-Folk
Although Kyle Andrews's music resists traditional categories, his songs are infectious. He has the potential to sound like a handful of well-known artists and, yet, his songs are completely unique. Take Josh Rouse's Under Cold Blue Stars, add a dash of Pete Yorn's vocals, throw in an Apple powerbook with pre-programmed electronica beats à la Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, blend and serve. It's clear from watching his live show at The End that Andrews is heavily influenced by the aforementioned artists; still, he adopts these influences and transforms them into his own style of alternative techno-folk that pushes against (and expands) the boundaries of traditional folk music.
The line-up included Frankenberry on bass (see additional photo), which added a level of charm and humor to the show. Richie Lister added the Jon Brion-esque keys, and Andrews accompanied himself on the acoustic guitar as well as pre-programmed electronica. The mix was a refreshing blend of techno-folk that fans of Josh Rouse and Wilco are sure to enjoy. Perhaps because Andrews sat comfortably behind his Apple computer with his acoustic guitar in hand, Saturday night's set had a "living room recording session" vibe. Expect the unexpected from Andrews, as he is an ever-evolving artist whose live shows promise to be unpredictable.
Having now developed a strong and well-deserved fan-base here in Nashville, Kyle Andrews will no doubt become a familiar name within the college alternative indie music scene. It should also be noted that his technical expertise and creative brilliance as a producer are currently being tapped by many other Nashville and Chicago-area artists. Go see Andrews live and you will catch a glimpse of the future of indie alternative music.
