January 22, 2009 @ The Basement — Madi Diaz

Madi Diaz is Creating a Well-Deserved Buzz on Nashville's Indie Scene

Madi Diaz is relatively new on the Nashville indie pop scene, but she's fast becoming everyone's pick for the next big thing out of Music City. Diaz's performance at The Basement on Thursday night (January 22) was proof enough that all the buzz is well-deserved. The set consisted of several songs from the new CD, as well as an unbelievable folk-pop version of Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again."

Fresh out of Berklee College of Music, Madi Diaz looks to be about 22 years old. She's cute in a 1970s Valerie Bertinelli "One Day at a Time" kind of way, and she has a surprisingly strong and confident voice. Combine the above with stellar songwriting and a co-writer/guitarist/singer (Kyle Ryan) who hits a pretty good harmony and you've got a solid act. Think Feist sans reverb with Carly Simon's sensibilities; or if it's easier, think the female Josh Rouse (1972). It's damn good either way you look at it. I'm putting my money on Madi Diaz being the next indie Nashville act to step on David Letterman's stage (Erin McCarley just did that, if you didn't know).

Diaz's CD Ten Gun Salute is now available. Fans of Feist, Josh Rouse, Carly Simon, and good music will find much to like in Madi Diaz. —Vincent Wynne
