March 28, 2008 @ The End — Cary Ann Hearst & the Gun Street Girls

Cary Ann Hearst & the Gun Street Girls are Burning up the South

Nashville native turned Charleston, SC resident Cary Ann Hearst and her band The Gun Street Girls are blazing a trail through the South on their current tour. Friday night's performance at The End in Nashville marked the fourth time I've seen CAH, and I'm always reminded of the great Jerry Lee Lewis when I see a CAH show. Not because her music is similar, but because a single metaphor impresses itself upon me with such force that I cannot adopt another: fire. Oh, and also because I feel terrible for the band that follows her. With lyrics as blue-collar as Lucinda Williams' and a voice as strong as Dolly Parton, Cary Ann Hearst & the Gun Street Girls fire up the stage with edgy alt-country music that cuts straight to the core—it's the closest thing I've seen to actually setting a piano ablaze before exiting the stage. I'm now thoroughly convinced that following Cary Ann Hearst is one of the worst career moves any band can make.

Last November I reviewed CAH's AMA showcase at The Basement (read it). This review was a properly written criticky kind of review, and so perhaps I'll let the people speak for me this time. Rarely do I pay much attention to myspace comments, but a cursory glance at a few of CAH's comments tells the story: "Ya'll are basically the shit"; "anyone gotta match... burn, baby, burn disco inferno"; "heck the fuck yeah, you musta poured gasoline on the band, cause they was on fire"; "Good Grief, Rev. Cary Ann!!! You and the GSG choir sure gave a heck of a sermon at the Church of the First Star Bar last Thursday night in Atlanta. What a revival it was! I got saved by Hillbilly Rock & Roll after the opening number and starting testifying after the second PBR." So there you have it. Enough said. A new CD is expected in 2008. Buy it when it comes out, and do not, do not, do not miss her live show. —Vincent Wynne
