MARCH, 2007 IN REVIEW

Hello again Listen!Nashville readers. I want to thank all of you for reading the reviews, sending the emails, and mailing the press kits. Press kits are the best way for me to quickly grasp the dynamics that fuel the live performances. I'd also like to thank all of the artists who are posting my reviews to their websites and myspace pages. Together we will get the word out!

The month of March was dominated by puremusic.com's terrific concert series at Bongo Java, After Hours. I attended almost every performance, but I narrowed my reviews to what I believe were the most notable performances. Luke Doucet controlled the intimate room with confident guitar playing and a bad-ass stompin' blues acoustic version of "Get Her Away From Me" where he eventually looped a series of hot fingerstyle blues riffs, pulled a harmonica out of his pocket and just plain tore it up. Doucet's 50's era Stella acoustic has a remarkable tone. Look for Doucet to be more active in Nashville next fall, when he and his wife Melissa will officially make Nashville their home (according to Luke, at least). Last word on Doucet—if you saw Luke's ten year old daughter perform with him at The Basement, you know you witnessed one of the coolest damn moments in The Basement history.

March 2007 brought us the first Nashville performances from come-back kid Tommy Womack since the release of his most recent CD "There I Said It." Womack's autobiographical songs about the loss of dreams, particularly the Nashville dream, is ironically bringing him the success that has eluded him during his 20 plus years as a Musician here in Music City. Womack's live performances have been honest, humble, and one hell of a rock 'n' roll show.

Finally, I would be remiss not to mention the gracious efforts of puremusic.com's founder Frank Goodman, who brought us the successful 8-week concert series at Bongo Java. For no cover charge to the public, Frank gathered some of Nashville's best singer-songwriters together for intimate low volume performances. These very special performances were the highlight of March 2007 in Nashville. Thank you Frank! —Vincent Wynne, Editor
