May 26th, 2007 @ The Basement—Conor Lynch and Friends

Conor Lynch & Friends Turn Back Time

Saturday night, May 26th 2007, Conor Lynch invited his friends Chris Scruggs, Megan McCormick, and Jamie Lampkins onstage for a set of old time country. This talented quartet draws deeply from the wells of Western Swing, traditional country, bluegrass, and folk to create a sound that is similar to and as moving as Neil Young's Harvest Moon.

This performance was recorded live with a single microphone placed in the audience near the front of the stage. Chris Scruggs was flawless on the pedal steel, and his playing is so gorgeous that he could charm not just the snakes, but the snake handlers too. Guitarist virtuoso Megan McCormick at 20 years old is perhaps one of the most talented young guitarists on the Nashville scene. Playing everything from Western Swing and jazz to Bluegrass and roots rock—and with a voice reminiscent of Emily Saliers—McCormick's presence onstage is a force to be reckoned with. Jamie Lampkins added the Bluegrass banjo rolls, thumping upright bass rhythms, and superb backing vocals. Last but not least, Conor Lynch delivered soft Neil Young inspired vocals that bring out the folky underside of this quartet's old time country sound.

Lynch and his three friends have the kind of onstage chemistry that most of us can only imagine occurred during Grand Ole Opry performances at the Ryman Auditorium many decades ago. I anticipate hearing more from these four, perhaps a live Basement recording if we're lucky. In addition, check out Megan McCormick in June at the Basement for a solo show.
