May 22, 2009 @ The Basement — Sarah Siskind

Sarah Siskind Combines Folk, Bluegrass, and Celtic Influences for New Record, Puts on Stellar Performance at the Basement

Nashville-based Sarah Siskind managed to round up the all-star cast of players who contributed to her just-released phenomenal record Say It Louder for a glorious performance in the intimate surroundings of The Basement.

Siskind's finely tuned signature sound blends Folk, Bluegrass, Celtic, and Jazz influences to create a "bluegrassier" version of Joni Mitchell. She can deftly quote from the hill country bluegrassers and country rockers while punctuating songs with just enough heady jazz to keep you on your toes. With the addition of one of Nashville's most under-rated guitarists, Joe McMahan, Siskind's new record is a brilliant pastiche that will please a wide-ranging audience including fans of Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, Bill Frisell and even Pat Matheny.

It's important to note that every player on Siskind's new record has a resume of producing credits. Lex Price (Mindy Smith) on bass, Joe McMahan (Kevin Gordon) on guitar, Ian Fitchuk (Landon Pigg) on drums, and Jason Lehning (Josh Rouse and so many more great Nashville artists) on keys and co-producing alongside Siskind. The results are indeed reflective of each player's strengths. The live show Friday night (May22, 2009) was an absolute treat. Siskind and company performed the new record Say It Louder from start to finish. Needless to say, the entire performance was outstanding. Siskind's vocals were flawless while Joe McMahan made sounds emerge from his '54 Goldtop that were just divine. This show will go down as one of the best shows of 2009 in Nashville.

Look for Sarah Siskind in a town near you as she embarks on a short tour up the East Coast in the coming weeks. Get the record, as Say It Louder will be considered among the best of the Folk/Bluegrass/Americana releases for 2009. —Vincent Wynne
